The Other America Revisited

The Other America Revisited

Government supported indolence is maneuver the Obama Administration utilizes to keep the population in check. A constant flow of treasury largesse, to tens of millions, perpetuates societal weaknesses disallowing the helpless from moving ahead of their own economic vices. As a result an entitlement mentality has developed that is so profound a catastrophe would befall anyone who has to put aside the flood of goodies that arrives weekly from Uncle Obama. Therefore self-made prisons arise where an individual cannot break free of the bonds the political over-class has inflicted on them. Self-serving individuals, who are enhanced by this economic morass, keep their political titles intact by those who partake in this monetary feast, which continues the status quo. Change is the driving force for those with ambition, not for those anchored to the certainty of a welfare handout. Results of government enforced laziness are evident, especially in the cities. Unemployment is conspicuously high in any group you examine. Murder rates exceed those from Middle East countries. Single parent households continue to rise to exponential levels. Even after government officials spin high school graduation rates, they are still low. Violent crime is business as usual.  Maryland exemplifies the latter with a government that thrives on the status quo.  Blue states officials notoriously buy votes from their entitlement base in return

for subsidizing their life styles. Yet these people never seem to grow beyond their checks. A recent conversation with an official from a Maryland detention facility opened the eyes of many who would listen to his sagacious words. Why work when a check is at your door on schedule, regularly. Why work when a kid can run drugs and earn several thousand dollars per week. Why work when each child you conceive increases your monthly take. Why work when the stigma of welfare was removed with an EBT card. This official’s elaboration, taken collectively, is the reason why the so-called poverty class will remain the so-called poverty class, there are too many incentives not to grow. Savvy Politicians play upon this economic class to continue the gravy flowing at the expense of the private sector. In the end there will be an array of cities similar to Detroit: bankrupt, demoralized, polarized and dying. The masters of this destruction will move up the food chain while those left behind will live in the quagmire they created. Riddick: Into the Dark

Riddick: scifi the way it should be

Riddick is an iconic character played by Van Disel in three movies:  Pitch Black, the Chronicles of Riddick and the newest installment Riddick- Into the Dark. Van Disel recreates his version of Riddick 9 years after the last chapter was released. Left for dead on a planet with no name, the anti-hero of this film has two needs: vengeance and survival.  With an interesting array of alien creatures desiring to kill our protagonist in nearly every scene, you may not want to take a break to the candy stand. A wanted criminal in half the galaxy, bounty hunters seem to find him no matter where he is. Riddick is able to outwit the lowlife and the more advanced animals chasing him, to his own advantage. Small hints of nontraditional sexual roles are sprinkled throughout Riddick’s negotiations with his potential captors. Background sets flesh out the harsh reality Riddick must contend with to survive.  Into the Dark is more reminiscent of the first movie Pitch Black than its sequel. David Twohy wrote and directed this latest chapter of Riddick, allowing his imagine to move as far as the set designers would permit. In the event you are searching for pure scifi, such as a Star Wars adventure, this is not the movie for you.  Ingenuity is embedded in this well written script, loaded with twists and turns, to keep the audience on edge. Twohy  has the so-called good guys and gal desperately searching for our anti-hero, who is not very far away.  For hardcore science fiction addicts, who rebuff the dilute and worn out nature of the Star Trek series, this movie was created for you. Van Disel, no stranger to sequels, would do himself and the audience an injustice if he did not develop this character any further. I suggest there may be several sequels to follow.  Running time is approximately 2 hours and worth the watch. Mark Davis MD, your intrepid reviewer at large. Syria: wrong war, wrong time, wrong president

Syria: wrong war, wrong time, wrong president

America is on the eve of another mistake. Arm twisting, not to dissimilar to the efforts made for Obamacare, have resurfaced to force passage of Congressional authorization to attack Syria. Will President Obama grease the fingers of members of Congress to obtain their vote, as he has done under other circumstances, will be revealed as the process moves forward. Secretary of State John Kerry has been roaming the media for support to rage yet another war in the Middle East. He has been challenged and in some cases impugned for his stance on the Syrian dilemma. John Kerry, no stranger to controversy, has provided quasi answers to direct questions concerning chemical weapons used on Syrian civilians. His success in moving Obama’s agenda forward appears to be failing. Recent reports on Drudge and Fox news indicate there are not enough members of either house willing to stick their necks into another noose for Obama, as they did with the tragedy called Obamacare. President Obama has reluctantly sought Congressional approval for his pending folly. Many commentators suspect Obama wants shared responsibility with the legislative branch in case events do not pan out in America’s favor. Most recent statistics note over 100,000 dead since the Syrian civil conflict began. People displaced from their homes numbers one to two million. Aside from the carnage, cities have been devastated by sustained bombings and brutal combat. Syria and its President harbor no fondness for America. Without this civil conflict raging, Syrians would once again turn their attentions to destroying Israel and American interests. The logical question to ask: Why is Obama pushing for intervention at this late date? He claims someone must hold Syria responsible for using chemical agents on a civilian population. Reports indicate chemical weapons may have been used several times in the past 30 months, without a whimper from the White House. There may be more reasons that have not been revealed by the Obama Administration for this poorly defined mission. Obama’s ineffectual style of management, for this war effort to nowhere, can be viewed on many levels. He has literally told Assad what his plans are for a potential attack.  There are no clear cut goals established by the President and no exit strategy. Obama requested permission for a brief assault, yet his Congressional minions are requesting a minimum of ninety days. No boots on the ground is another fallacy thrown into the mix. America is about to make a bigger mistake than electing the present occupant of the White House. This one will cost the lives of too many innocents to be worth the incursion. Congress should vote down any request for a Syrian attack. If Obama then goes it alone, the ramifications could be enough to draw impeachment charges against him. Let us all hope saner minds prevail.
